The First Commandment requires faith; without faith we cannot serve God and render acceptable worship to him. “What is it to have a god? or what is God?”6 This is Luther’s classical formulation of the problem of God in the Large Catechism. The very form of the question is significant. By equating the question “What is it to have a god?” with “What is God?” Luther shows that the God whom he seeks and whom he hears in the Decalogue
